Empty Nest

I dont know if you remember me telling you about the baby birds outside of our front door. But yesterday I noticed it was very quiet out there. I went outside to look at the nest for the first time, it had always been covered with a ceramic iguana so we never saw the babies. But Joey and Kealani would watch through our screen door, as the mother bird would come in to feed the babies. And they would also run to see when they could hear the babies calling out for food. And always when we would come back from a walk they would never go over there to disturb them. Somehow I think they were showing respect for the nest! Anyway all was quiet yesterday so here is what it looks like, two eggs that never hatched! And the eggs were about the size of a marble. I hope the babies are doing fine!

Wheres our Mom?

"Joey, will our mommy ever get off the computer?

"Hey! Remember us?"

(scroll down to see what Ive been doing, hee hee)

Max The Owlet Looks Outside

Oh! There is Mcgee delivering the first meal of the night! Both the female and the male hunt and provide for the little ones and only at night. The record so far for meals delivered is 15 rodents/rabbits for four hungry owlets!

Here is Max, the first owlet to hatch. He is waiting for the nightly drop of food as Molly and Mcgge hunt at night. He looks so grown up here and he is about 2 weeks away from fledging. You can see under the perch, stuck in between the slats, a pellet. Pellets are what owls "urk" up and it contains the undigested parts of their food such as bones and fur. Children dissect these pellets in classrooms and you can find the whole skeleton of the animal that was eaten.
A shout out goes to Carlos Royal who took these pictures and this owl box is on his property! I have been glued to my computer ever since I found Molly and Im am completely enamoured with these owls!! I hope you are enjoying them too!
